Open Question: Why do people waste so much money on gas with SUVs and trucks?

I don't understand. Even if gas weren't 4.00 a gallon, why do people like spending tons of money on gas for behemoths when the money could be used well elsewhere? I have a Honda Civic and I weathered 4.00 gas very well. If the gas prices go down, it will be even more of a windfall for me. Why are people so stupid to want to waste tons of money on gas when it's completely unnecessary. Why does a teenage girl working for minimum wage need to use a big Expedition?
